Why Mattress Cleaning is so important + Tips

Everyone understands the importance of washing bed sheets every one or two weeks, but few people remember to perform a periodic mattress cleaning. Why does this happen? Probably one of the factors may be that if there are no visible stains people do not associate that it is dirty (just as we see happens with carpets, area rugs, and upholstery. Whatever the reason, in this post you will understand why mattress cleaning is so important and what tips you should follow to achieve the best results.

Reasons to clean your mattress

  • Remove stains
  • For better rest and a healthier environment.

  • Remove sweat and body oils

Tips for a mattress cleaning

Use a mattress cover

The use of a mattress cover is one of the most important factors that can prevent a considerable amount of damage to your mattress and does not require a significant investment. There are different types of mattress covers to choose from anti-dust mite, quilted, waterproof, and viscoelastic… We recommend doing some research to see which one best suits your needs (if you have children or pets if you sweat intensively if you have difficulty sleeping …) and thus ensure that you keep your mattress covered without losing sleep quality.

Wash the mattress cover, sheets, and pillowcases

We started the post by commenting that for a significant part of the population, sheets are included in their weekly laundry, but we must not forget the mattress cover and pillowcases. Make sure to wash everything weekly at a temperature of at least 60º celsius.

As Dr. Kerry LeBenger(allergy and immunology specialist), “each human sheds millions of skin cells each day, and those skin cells are good nutrition for dust mites which have to grow in a certain amount of humidity, and that’s what accumulates. And that is what causes people to have allergies.”

Flip/rotate your mattress

To avoid sleep pattern marks, it is important to rotate your mattress (unless otherwise specified in the mattress specifications). If your mattress is new, it will be wise to rotate it more often during the first year, as this is when the marks are most likely to become permanent. If it is not new, it is advisable to rotate it approximately 2 times per year.

Vacuum your mattress

If you have read more of our posts, such as 8 steps before a professional carpet cleaning you will know that vacuuming is a must for mattresses, carpets, area rugs, and upholstery! Vacuum your mattress at least once every 3 months for good maintenance and to maximize its useful life.

Don’t make the bed as soon as you get up!

Always ventilate first! To avoid humidity and the appearance of mold, always ventilate first by opening the windows and throwing the sheets back for a while before making the bed, you will avoid humidity and therefore, mold and mildew growth.

Professional Mattress Cleaning

It is advisable to get your mattress professionally cleaned at least once or twice a year, which varies depending on the use you give it, if there are stains, and how much time has passed since the last professional cleaning. It is important that the moment you stain your mattress (applicable also for carpets, upholstery, and rugs), you act quickly and call a professional steam cleaner to advise you on the solution that your mattress will need.

So, if my mattress is stained, is it better not to act?

Our professional technicians with more than 30 years of experience recommend that the best thing you can do when you are facing a stain (unless you are a professional cleaner) is to take a towel and absorb as much as you can. Always before using any home remedies, call a professional cleaner to make sure that this solution is effective.

In the case of using any spot cleaners, always make sure to test them on an inconspicuous part of your furniture so as not to cause any visible damage in case it is not compatible. Always check the label specifications of each piece of furniture and also the different uses of each spot cleaner before starting cleaning.
